Lamigo Monkeys Release Efrain Nieves

The Lamigo Monkeys have released import pitcher Efrain Nieves, according to the league's official website.

Nieves was signed from the Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League back in May. He appeared in 13 games for the Monkeys, starting 10, and finished with a 7-3 record, a 6.12 ERA and a 1.85 WHIP in 57.1 innings. He struck out 53 and walked 34.

The crafty lefty was actually quite consistent this season, allowing two, three or four earned runs in eight of his ten starts. But with Zack Segovia waiting to be called up to the first team, someone had to go.

With Orlando Roman leading the league lead in wins, and Mitch Talbot having allowed just four earned runs over his last 24.2 innings, the Monkeys chose to release Nieves.

The import roster deadline of Aug. 31 is just 2 days away, meaning the Monkeys will likely head into the stretch run with Roman, Talbot and Segovia.

Nieves becomes the fourth Monkeys import pitcher to be released this season, and 14th to leave the CPBL in 2016:
