Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) Announces Starting Pitchers for World Baseball Classic

Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) has released its pitching blueprint for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, the Apple Daily reports

Kuo Chun-Lin (NPB Seibu Lions) will draw the start for Team Taiwan in the opener. He will be relieved by left-hander Chen Kuan-Yu (NPB Chiba Lotte Marines) and then Cleveland Indians prospect Chiang Shiao-Ching in Game 1. In stacking these three pitchers, manager Kuo Tai-Yuan has wisely selected his best pitchers for the team's opening game against Israel and seems to be going all in on Tuesday's opener.

The team has also appointed Sung Chia-Hao (NPB Rakuten Golden Eagles) to start Game 2 against the Netherlands.

The Taiwanese national team has stated that it would like to start Chen Kuan-Yu in Game 3 versus the host team, South Korea, which is a major reason why Chen is coming in as a reliever in Game 1 and not starting. The management is hoping to keep Chen under 50 pitches against Isreal so he can be eligible to pitch again on Thursday (one day of rest). However, the outcomes of Games 1 and 2 will play a big factor in the final decision of Game 3's starter.

Pool A kicks off on Monday, March 6, as Isreal will take on South Korea at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) will begin its tournament the following day as it will face Isreal in a matinee.
