UPDATE: ET Today is also reporting that the Fubon Guardians, and possibly another team, are in the mix for the services of RHP Bryan Woodall.

Starting Pitcher Bryan Woodall may be back with the Chinatrust Brothers for the upcoming 2018 CPBL season, according to ET Today. The report states that both sides are currently in contract discussuons, but nothing is finalized yet.

The 2017 All-Star compiled a 13-8 record over 26 starts last year with a 3.63 ERA, which was fourth best in the league. The consistent right-hander also led the CPBL in innings pitched (173.2) and BB/9 (1.66), was second in FIP (2.84) and third in WHIP (1.27). It would be the veteran’s fourth season with the organization.

The Brothers finished the 2017 season with LHP Rick Teasley, RHP Orlando Roman and Woodall. The team will be having Spring Training in the USA this year as well as having a try out for foreign-born players.

  1. How long do CPBL teams hold the rights to their foreign pitchers? After what amounts to two full successful seasons in the CPBL, what kind of salary can Woodall reasonably command? $20,000 per month? $25,000 per month?

  2. Most pitchers' contracts will not be for the entire season. Think till June or July, then it is just a case of hanging on till after the signing deadline. It's a very stressful situation for import players.

I believe only Loree last year had the security of a full-season contract, but I could be wrong. The details aren't easily available and I never have the heart to ask "how much?"

I think the Brothers can offer Woodall more than the Guardians, so in that case, your estimate would seem accurate. But that is just my best guess from whispers and rumors regarding salaries, nothing concrete.

  3. I'm surprised that Orlando Roman did not command a full season contract in 2017. He's certainly put in the time?

Any confirmation whether Loree will be back with the Fubon Guardians or Roman back with the Brothers in 2018?

    1. Don't think Loree is confirmed but almost a guarantee he will be back.

As for Roman, if I had to put money on it, I would say he wouldn't be back in 2018, but again, that's just a best guess. He certainly has the stuff to have another successful year.

  4. Roman did not pitch well in second half of 2017, which may be his downfall. Too bad, he's had a very successful CPBL career.

Roman is currently pitching in Puerto Rico's winter league, which has only just started due to Hurricane Maria in September. Unfortunately, Roman got lit up in his first start, allowing six runs, all earned, in four innings pitched.

    1. Roman has certainly accomplished a lot in his professional career: Japan, Taiwan, nationally for Puerto Rico to name a few
