Wood Bill Hunting: The Fubon Guardians Go from Good to Great and Add Bryan Woodall and Bruce Billings

The Fubon Guardians have added two of the most experienced recent CPBL pitchers in Bryan Woodall (above) and Bruce Billings

The Fubon Guardians have continued their aggressive sophomore season and signed two of the CPBL’s most experienced import pitchers: former Chinatrust Brothers RHP Bryan Woodall and former Uni Lion RHP Bruce Billings. Terms of the deals were not disclosed, as is the norm in the CPBL, but it wouldn't be surprising if the Guardians locked up both Billings and Woodall for guaranteed, full-season contracts.

Woodall, a  2017 All-Star, compiled a 13-8 record over 26 starts last year with a 3.63 ERA, which was fourth best in the league. The consistent right-hander also led the CPBL in innings pitched (173.2) and BB/9 (1.66), was second in FIP (2.84) and third in WHIP (1.27).

Billings on the other hand made 26 starts with a 13-10 record to go with the league’s sixth best qualified ERA of 4.17. Billings led the league in starts and strikeouts two years ago but improved his quality metrics in 2017 while reducing his quantity slightly.

With the additions of Woodall and Billings (who will join Mike Loree), the Guardians now have arguably the best front-end rotation in the league on paper as their CPBL experience trumps that of their competitors. And in Taiwan, familiarity of the league and environment is worth a lot more than people think.

After the revamping of the offense earlier this year, the Fubon Guardians have to be the early favorites to capture the 2018 CPBL championship. The 29th season of the league should be one of the most competitive years of Taiwanese baseball as all four clubs have committed to winning the first-half league title.

Both Woodall and Billings will report to camp in the following week, just before the official preseason begins, which should give them ample time to get brought up to speed.

  1. Those BABIP numbers suggest that they could be even better this year than last year! Two very nice signings and just the two pieces Fubon needed to round out an already amazing team.
